about

Written in November or December of 1995, this one was an attempt to get pseudo-medieval. The melody and bass are in parallel fifths, and the prechorus is a straight-up quotation of the 14th-century's biggest pop song, "L'Homme Armé," which I'd learned from noted (and sadly passed) early music performer John Fleagle for my fifth-grade medieval festival. The lines about blood, tears, and birth were part of an ongoing obsession with literary abjection, which I'd picked up reading Burroughs in 8th grade.

lyrics

Mother’s Blood

Swaddled in mother’s blood
Your armor for today
It’s a boy new and icy cold
Weight of Earth
Hungry birth
Conflagration’s prey

L’homme armé doibt on doubter
On a fait partout crier
Que chascun se viegne armer
D’un haubregon de fer

You my son my weakness here
Cast you off
You my strength my source of fear
Cast you off
You my heart and you my life
Cast you off
On a journey take my strife
Cast you off from me

Swaddled in father’s tears
Some things never change
It’s a quest in my cowardice
In my place
Burns my face
Road ahead is strange
I force this upon you
Forced on me as well
No more forgiving now
Built in my own cell
